Potable Water

Potable Water

Potable water refers to water that is safe for humans to consume. We often think that water that is clear and doesn’t smell is safe for us to drink. This can be the case in some instances. However, water holds tiny viruses and bacteria that the eye can’t see. Removal of these microorganism and other harmful contaminants makes the water potable, safe to drink.

Potable Water Standards

Our municipal reticulated water systems are tested daily to ensure that the water they produce and supply to their customers meet the highest of standards. This means that the reticulated water supplied to our homes is potable water.
This is not the case for rural areas, mining camps and small communities who do not receive reticulated water system. In these cases there are a variety of water sources such as groundwater from man-made bores or wells, fresh water from rivers and lakes, brackish water from aquifers and estuaries and rainwater harvesting. But in order to ensure that it meets potable water standards further treatment is necessary.

Treatment

Water treatment in these cases can range from a slow sand filtration to a media filtration combined with reverse osmosis and chlorination to ensure its safe to be consumed. The type of treatment you choose will need to take into consideration different things such as the ease of use, cost to run and maintain as well as the resources to maintain such treatment.
