Cooling Tower

Cooling tower is a cylindrical concrete tower used in factories to remove process heat and cool lower the temperature. Common applications include cooling the circulating water used in food and beverage manufacturing, oil refineries, petrochemical and other chemical plants, thermal power stations and HVAC systems for cooling buildings.

Dry Cooling and Bacteria

Besides treating the circulating cooling water in large industrial cooling tower systems to minimize scaling and fouling, the water should be filtered to remove particulates, and also be dosed with biocides and algaecides to prevent growths that could interfere with the continuous flow of the water. Under certain conditions, a biofilm of micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae can grow very rapidly in the cooling water, and can reduce the heat transfer efficiency of the cooling tower. Biofilm can be reduced or prevented by dosing chlorine or other chemicals.

Water treatment is also used to optimize the cooling process so that operating costs and risks are reduced. Highly treated recycled water may be an effective means of reducing cooling tower consumption of potable water, in regions where potable water is scarce.

Cooling towers are important in commercial and industrial sites and can also allow for cost savings. There are many industrial and commercial applications that will require a cooling tower to maintain systems.
