Continuous Media Systems (CMS)

The CMS (Continuous Media System) is one of the primary filtration choice in wastewater treatment plants when it comes to any application with high levels of solids.  The automatic operation of the CMS allows efficient, simple and effective processing of total suspended solids (TSS) in the wastewater, significantly reducing downstream loading of filtration or pre-treatment equipment.

Reducing Total Suspended Solids in Wastewater

Total suspended solids are a total quantity measurement of solid material per volume of water. This means that TSS is a specific measurement of all suspended solids, organic and inorganic, by mass. TSS can include a wide variety of material, such as silt, decaying plant and animal matter, industrial waste, and sewage. Enviro Concepts Continuous Media System filters can be one of the primary stages for removal of suspended solids in wastewater and washbay effluents. Suspended solids can be trapped by our CMS filter. Solids removal is important for several reasons:

  • It can be used as trade waste pre-treatment that requires the removal of suspended solids in wastewater to meet all the criteria of trade waste discharge.
  • Without CMS treatment, there could be excessive wear and tear within the pump, seals, diaphragms, valves and other filters.
  • Enviro Concepts also uses the Continuous Media System as a pre-treatment for Enviro Concepts Oil Water Separator Systems, Dissolved Air Flotation process and in our EL Water Recycling Plants.

How CMS works

continuous media system, suspended solids

Waste water collected from our wash pad, pit or sump is often pumped into a solid settling tank. It can then be taken through the Continuous Media System (CMS) where it is evenly distributed over the surface of the filter media. The filter paper is supported by a motorized conveyor belt which acts as a catchment area for the solids, sludge and slurry to accumulate.

Contaminated water is filtered through the paper by gravity catching the solids in the paper with the water passing through to the base of the CMS. As the solids, sludge and slurry fill up the filter paper, the water level increases (as it is not getting filtered), activating the float. This process advances the CMS filter paper automatically into the waste container and the filtration process continues.

The clean water is collected in the base of the CMS in a trough and then it can be gravity discharged or pumped to the next stage of filtration.
