Process Water

Industrial equipment and processes such as boilers, cooling towers, heat exchangers and autoclaves all need a water in their processes. Different industries have varying process water quality requirements, typically the process water being used is usually purified or which has lower conductivity and lower total dissolved solids compared to normal tap water.

Where is Process Water Needed

Some industrial processes, notably in the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries, need large amounts of very pure process water. For example, the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries will require process water having conductivity lower than 1 µS/cm. In comparison, sea water has a conductivity of more than 50 mS/cm (or 53,000 µS/cm), while normal un-purified tap water may have a conductivity of 50 µS/cm. In these applications, feedwater is first processed into purified water and then further processed to produce ultrapure process water.

Water treatment processes such as reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, multimedia filtration, and deionisation (ion-exchange) are used to treat and purify normal tap water and surface water.

The food and beverage industry also use large amounts of process water in industrial bakeries, breweries, wineries, dairy food processors, canneries and meat, fish and poultry processing. The auto repair and service also use process water for service stations, body repair, fleet maintenance and even tyre service. Paper manufacturing use process water to turn tree bark into pulp and finally into the paper final product. Process water is also required when recycling paper.
